So this CDC chart includes a useful statistic in column 4: "% of expected deaths", which is immune to the widely-reported misattribution of deaths to Covid-19. It compares the number of total deaths to the average total deaths in that week for the previous 3 years. "100%" means that the death count for that week are the same as for the last few years.
More recent statistics are probably not complete, which accounts for the low recent numbers, but we'll see soon how they fill out with the next update, which should be in the next 24 hours as of this afternoon (Sunday the 3rd).
We do see a definite "total death" bump peaking on the week ending on 4/11.
So after this forthcoming update we should know if the total death numbers are truly receding.
