Very true! As for The old Bard, I did spend some time reading most of his works, first in school and then as part of my self education mainly during my University student time before I got my first job at 28. All of that of course in original and sure, while using editions with comments.
As for the vocabulary, much of it one simply has to learn, but the grammar is quite easy having grown up with Scandinavian languages and being well studied in German.
One tip: If you haven't read Romeo and Juliet by age aro 20, don't waste your time on it ! That play really is something for young people to indulge in ... IMHO. I mean, such a waste if you miss reading it around the time big love pops up and invades your brains ...
Actually, during my 'time of self improvement' I even studied large parts of King James Bible from 1611! The main source of modern English and even more so than Shakespeare.
