Would you have preferred that he start an argument over Putin's assertion then and there? What would the outcome have been, and what good would it have done? What would critics be saying about it now, no matter how it played out?

Putin is an old KGB hand. Disinformation and fomenting chaos among his adversaries is one of his strong suits. Why allow ourselves to fall for it?

If Trump cured cancer tomorrow, his critics would say he withheld its timing for his own advantage. If he walked on water, his critics would say he can't swim. At some point, nonsensical assertions deserve nonsensical replies.
