Quite seriously, not trying to ignite jealousy, just reporting my current situation. I am sure there will be time when I envy your weather. (And like a typical Vancouverite I am paying 70% of my income for rent.).

I always seem to miss harvesting some of the garlic, and since I move the two separated garlic plantings every year, they have ended up growing widely in my garden as well.

For greens like kale and collards, I actually do no planting at all. I just let them flower and go to seed, and then the songbirds come down and feed on the seeds, in the process scattering them, so they also pop up all over the place. (You can differentiate them from weeds right away thanks to the very distinctive first sets of leaves the brassicas produce after sprouting.) And of course the songbirds serenade us as well. I think the male finch sings to attract his mate(s) and offspring before they collectively come down for a feed, first cleaning bugs off the plants (I think) while the plants are blooming and then munching on the seeds when they arrive.

Several of the nearby gardeners are the type who like everything carefully organised by variety into neat rows, so they look a bit aghast at my plots, little knowing the deep underlying plan I kinda sorta have...
