And yeah, she's right about this not being a "global competition." I agree with the gist of her question. I've never been a fan of relativism, and I don't see why we should be comparing ourselves with other countries. Our focus should be on reducing deaths here and trying to come up with a way to live with the new reality of this pandemic, not trying to brag that we are doing better than other countries.
Of course, the media is being hypocritical, but they've always been that way.
Of course, the reporter is being emotional and argumentative, but so is Trump.
And of course, Trump just says what's on the top of his mind, which happened to be China at that moment.
So no, he didn't say "Ask China" because the reporter was Asian. He said it because he was upset that the reporter questioned why he was so focused on the "global competition."
That's my nuanced stance on this. Few people, however, are going to see any nuance here, thanks to the hyperpolarization of race.
