Dave,

RMX from Intel was the first real multi-tasking, protected mode OS for the PC plus it was a true real-time system and not just time-sliced. You could run Windows under it as a task until Windows3.1 took over the supervisory mode. Unfortunately it was designed for embedded-systems use and had what we used to call the "inhuman interface" for loading applications. Far too expensive for the normal user to even consider buying. The history of RMX also shows why the segmented architecture was used on the x86, etc.
