Robbery suspect released from jail Monday morning accused of three Fremont attacks later in day
FREMONT — A man described by police as a repeat offender who had just been released from jail Monday morning on a robbery charge was arrested again two hours later on suspicion of punching three people in the face in unprovoked attacks.
The suspect, Marcell Washington, 37, a transient out of San Jose was arrested for two counts of felony battery, one count of misdemeanor battery and resisting arrest. He was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at Santa Rita Jail.
 Marcell Washington was arrested on suspicion of two counts of felony battery, misdemeanor battery, and resisting arrest, police said. Police said at about 1:09 p.m. Monday employees at the Irvington Safeway called about a man, later identified as Washington, who punched an employee in the face who was just standing in the store and fled the store on a bicycle. As officers were responding, two additional victims reported being struck in the face by the same suspect. One was another transient and the other was a bystander, police said.
None of the three victims knew Washington, and said he punched them in their faces for no apparent reason. police said. “It appears that Mr. Washington just assaulted anyone who was in his path,” Lt. Eric Tang said. All three victims required medical attention for their injuries and were treated and released by paramedics. |
