Is it possible to have a civilized discussion with a Trump supporter?


A little slice o’ life in lieu of a direct answer…Back in the 70s my brother was in medical school completing his psychiatry rotation. He was discussing this portion of his training with my parents and told them, “You know, some of the patients in this hospital don’t appear to be ill at all. Sometimes I chat with them and we have great discussions and they seem VERY lucid. They talk about their families and their jobs and they make a lot of sense. But then they seem to lose their grip on reality and they start talking about how they were promised millions to do something, and how the staff has ganged up against them and is keeping them from talking to others, and how the nurses and doctors go into their rooms while they’re sleeping and perform rituals. At that point you realize why they’re there.” (The conversation was in French, so in the interest of truth and accuracy, I want to insist that I’m paraphrasing and translating) This is MY experience of trying to have a discussion with a Trump supporter. At one point, an outright lie/conspiracy theory/insult is used to support their position and I simply won’t resort to that so I try to change the conversation.

Recently, in a Messenger conversation with a good friend who moved back to Florida (from Montreal), the topic went from a car he was working on, to the great weather they were having, to how CoVid19 is fake news, to how Hillary, Obama and Mueller are running an operation through tunnels beneath NYC into Canada where they breed babies to harvest organs and drink their blood (complete with “proof”: an article from “Before It’s News” ???????). I refused to engage and suggested that we talk about his car and he promptly blocked me. And that was that.
