Mindmeld,
Our Freedom of Speech should not have to rely on the benevolence of Zuckerberg or any other tech mogul.
Benevolence is irrelevant here. Zuck wants to protect himself from lawsuits claiming that Facebook has an obligation to "police" itself. Same with Larry and Sergei.

Even on this very thread, there are certain snowflakes who are involving the FBI just because they think insults amount to criminal threats. You know who they are. Hence the SI admins are forced to "police" these forums as well.

And now we have the censors working tirelessly to remove posts and videos that don't conform to the government's message regarding COVID-19. Although I disagree with the content of most of those videos, I also disagree with the censorship thereof.

I guarantee you that Zuck feels like he shouldn't have to do all of this, that people ought to grow a spine and some critical thinking skills. Of course he'll publicly claim the opposite, that he is trying the best he can to rid Facebook of all "hate speech", "fake news", and "foreign interference."

But his actions speak otherwise. He has outsourced the job of moderating Facebook posts to a bunch of low-paid hall monitors, and they are doing a terrible job. Moreover, the turnover rate for said moderators is comically high, and the psychological effects of the job are substantial.

Zuck can easily increase the budget for moderators and attract better talent and better training, but he chooses not to because he feels like he shouldn't have to.
