Today I spoke with an analyst who covers Pairgain. He acknowledged that the CEO of Pairgain in attendence at the Montgomery Technology Conference said Pairgain lost a "small" amount of business to US West. This loss of business according to this analyst is immaterial and should not impact revenue or earnings results on a going forward basis.

It is thought Pairgain lost the business to Adtran; one thing is for certain, it is not Paradyne. Paradyne claims it has
developed a faster modem but it has only been tested by the company. This is an unknown product and its promise should not be
overestimated. While Hembrecht and Quist downgraded PAIR from strong buy to buy, it did not alter its long term price target. Furman Seltz,
Goldman Sachs and Salomon Smith Barney all have reviewed PAIR in the last 12 days and maintain their buy or attractive ratings on
the stock as well as 12 mos price targets ranging from $36 to $43. It is also acknowledged that PAIR's growth will not come in
this quarter or even the next (PAIR may even miss earnings by a penny), with substantial gains in market share and revenue coming
with actual full scale digital deployment in the second half of 1998 and thru out 1999, particularly in the western half of the
United States where PAIR still appears strong.
