David, That assumes that Atmel was telling us the truth or even know the truth about what is causing its problems. In general, I think the Asian slowdown makes folks less amenable to buying chips in dollars. This is compounded when NEC, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Taiwan, Inc. etc. can make most of those same chips in house. So, the slowdown hurts Atmel, at the top end of the tech pyramid, because the OEMs become more concerned with the cost of building their product rather than having the latest gizmo that increases their costs tremendously. And, while Atmel has less profits to reinvest, the others catch up even more. MB
