yes, for insect photography, you pretty much need the swivel screen
and also a fairly large LCD screen -- especially if your eyes are getting old.
i don't wear reading glasses when i'm out shooting insects as it's too easy
to forget you have them on and trip and fall because you can't see properly.
i've actually done so much insect photography that I barely need to look at a screen,
but i do like to be able to check to see if the insect is about centered on the LCD.
this is a nice camera - quite large and heavy - so i have a strap that is more
like a guitar strap, but I usually just carry it around in my hand.
i'm not really very conventional as photographers go.
and, yes, i like the amateur price range as my cameras go out in kayaks and canoes,
fall down hills with me,
and take a lot of pretty rough handling.
i also use my cameras a lot -- many many thousands of photos until they wear out.
i checked and it does HD video -- 1920 x 1080 - up to 60 fps
one thing that's pretty good is that mic.
i make videos of birds and they turn out quite well - the audio.
okay, well, here's the moon from NS on June 2.
i tried resizing this so it wouldn't be all over the screen.
not sure how this will look.
might look like crap. :)
i love photographing the moon.
have i ever written on here about my dad taking me to the dominion observatory in ottawa
when i was about 5.
we stood in a small line - just a few adults. i was the only kid.
the fellow working there that evening sat with me on a metal bench that had
some kind of hydraulic motor that raised the bench up to the telescope.
i got to see the moon through a pretty decent telescope.
i loved the craters. one of my aunts had given me a science book for xmas
and it had a map of the moon with the craters. i had started memorizing the map.
around this time, my parents gave me a Tom & Jerry LP where they go to the moon.
the sound effects were so well done in that - to give the feeling of outer space.
i must have listened to that a few hundred times.
there's a sort of melding of that LP, and the visit to see the moon at the observatory,
and seeing it all these years,
and photographing it with this camera.
it's a very special feeling for me -- to see the moon in this kind of detail
with all of those craters,
and a sort of weird atmospheric things -- the dark edges and silhouettes.
can't really explain it, but it's a mystical thing for me. very powerful.
