If it were really possible for one to "lose face", I would ask my wife to lose hers. LOL!!!! (Some very sick western humor...my apologies.) Having dealt directly more with Japanese than Chinese, unless I just met some unusual Japanese, it would seem the concept of losing face is s-l-o-w-l-y become a concern of the past. Practicality is taking precedence. In Japanese there are at least three different ways to say "I am sorry". On one occaision, when I had first been introduced to a Japanese gentleman, I used the wrong "i'm sorry" phrase for an error I made in pronouncing a word correctly. The guy started to console me, telling me "no. no. it not that bad." Once we got to know each other, there were no such problems. He became comfortable, and was very relaxed in his thoughts & actions. My point in this is fairly simple.... most of us here have come to realize we ALL belong to the same race. It is the human race. Stereotypes and generalities about other cultures simply prevent others from joining our race. My wish for this New Year is we have many more join the human race, and we can learn from each other.
