I don't know how much research you've done into OOBEs (Out of Body Experiences) or NDEs (Near Death Experiences), but the experience of the afterlife is cultural. Christians tend to see loved ones, J.C., or a bright light (God?).; while Buddhists see Sidartha, Pantheists see animal spirits, Muslims see Allah, and even some who still believe in the Norse Gods see Thor in Valhalla.

The dying (but YET UNDEAD) mind can play strong tricks on those who replace the great unknown with fables and myths.
