David, All of the pertussis vaccines contain pertussis toxoid. Some contain other components in addition to pertussis toxoid (PT). The other components are substances found on the outter cell wall of bacterium, Bordetella pertussis, that are known to produce an antibody responce. These are: filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), pertatin (PER) and fimbriae (FIM). Connaught has PT, FHA, PER and FIM. SmithKline Beecham has PT, FHA and PER. Biocine has PT, FHA and PER. NVX has PT only. The multicomponent argument was that the more components the more through the antibody responce i.e...higher efficacy and maybe longer protection. This claim is subject to debate and I don't know if we will ever know if this is actually the case. However; if the bacterium can mutate, as is the case in the Netherlands and mask an antibody responce to one component, the additional components will still provide protection. The Dutch mutation proves this point.
