An SI "email" system is very do-able and could be implemented quickly. I really like the idea and agree that it's potentially a way to offload off-topic discussion from the main threads.

My primary concern is that people who are afraid to post publicly -- lurkers far outnumber those who post -- might ask a lot of questions of those who do post. As a result, SI members (especially the highly followed/respected ones) might get saturated with private email, which could distract them from providing quality content publicly.

But it's worth considering!
