Glancing quickly via your link to the SET, I see the Shinawatra Income statement: They were profitable on an operating basis as of 09/30/97, but a big extraordinary item put them in the red. The nature of this Ex.o. Item need s to be found out. Further, the standards of Thai accounting needs to be found out as to differences to GAAP. I have an older semi-annual report from the Thai Capital Fund: Shinawatra is a big holding, as they have a large market cap in Thailand. These funds tend to index their portfolio to some degree.

Generally I'd be looking at "solidly financed" exporters or plays to may profit from the consumer scaling-down consumption pattern, like discount supermarket chains. Just an idea. I don't know if such a chain exists in Thailand.
