agreed. A major part of the problem in the Asian crisis has been government influence on the direction of economic growth and influence over the allocation of credit. Another major problem is the endemic corruption, nepotism and cronyism. This is especially a problem in SE Asia. I have often heard that the citizenry of these countries have accepted this situation as part of the bargain in exchange for rising living standards adn general prosperity. There is an aspect of that 'deal with the devil' that I find worrisome. Twenty years ago I read a book called "The Anatomy of Revolution" by Crane Brittan (sp?). The book compared the causes of the American, French and Russian Revolutions and the English Civil War. The thesis that he offers is that revolution does not occur when people are oppressed, no matter how brutally. Revolution occurs when peoples expectations have been raised and then crushed by an external political or economic event. This is a huge concern for SE Asia.
