I own both Merck and Microsoft. How come Microsoft stock started to rise several days before the 2-1 stock split announcement?

How come Merck went from 102 to 112 a week before they announced their earnings?

Leaks happen. All it takes is a whisper from an insider to an outsider (who would be difficult to trace). And there are just too many people involved that must prepare the earnings figures for there not to be an effect on the stock. You got accountants, lawyers, all the upper management (who I agree wouldn't trade on inside info), typists, etc.
