Mindmeld,
I read that he used the Secret Service personnel to push the protestors back a block.
It was federal troops.

Technically Trump is allowed to use federal troops as well as commandeer the National Guard (which is normally under the control of state governors) in order to quell civil unrest. This authorization goes all the way back to the 1807 Insurrection Act. It was last invoked during the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, and before that, during the riots of the 1960s.

However, I've been told by an army vet that the military abhors having to turn on its own citizens. The National Guard is one thing, but federal troops is something entirely different, at least in the context of quelling domestic matters. There's a lot to explain here, and even I don't fully understand it, but it's a matter of military professionalism.

Hence if Trump is going to invoke such a power, it should be put to good use. A photo op at a local church is NOT a good use of said power. Legally it's fine, but it was arguably irresponsible behavior.

And for what? To pose for a photo while holding a Bible? That isn't even theologically defensible. Politically it was stupid. And the media got another opportunity to demonstrate their righteous indignation.

And Trump proves once again that hardly anything he does is justifiable outside of the context of liberal hypocrisy.
