State of California v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Filed: 9/11/2017

Case Summary:

California filed a lawsuit with three other states after President Trump announced that he would be ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed those who entered the United States illegally as minors to remain on a temporary basis. This case was consolidated with a number of other similar challenges, including one brought by the regents of the University of California. On June 17, 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court sided against the Trump administration, arguing that it did not offer a sufficiently detailed justification for its decision to end the program. Sanctuary State FundingState of California v. SessionsFiled: 8/14/2017

Case Summary:

California sued Trump's Justice Department after the administration announced plans to cut off designed “sanctuary” jurisdictions from certain federal funding programs unless they cooperate with federal immigration agents. After a district court ruled in late November, 2018, that the funding cuts were unconstitutional, California asked that the same ruling be applied to yet another law enforcement grant that the Trump administration had pulled from the state.
