"Those were simpler and happier times"

Happier is relative. I'd say it was happier for the confederates, but much worse for their former slaves. Bathrooms and drinking fountains were still segregated. Ike used the army to integrate a high school in Little Rock in 1957, when I was in 8th grade. The UFW began organizing farm workers the summer between HS and college. The summer B4 my senior year in college, the voting rights act meant blacks no longer had to count the number of jelly beans in a jar in order to vote. The Supremes legalized interracial marriage when I was in grad school. Gays were in the closet. The first black TV star began his acting career my senior year in college, some 25 years B4 he became a RW hero for his ability to blame exposed butt cracks and baggy pants of young black males for all the problems in the black community, and 50 years B4 he would be sent to jail for date-raping women.

Industrialists were happier; they could dump their waste anywhere; land, sea, and air. Detroit was happier; they didn't have to add seat belts and catalytic convertors. Employers were happier; they didn't have to worry about safety regulations and bias in the workplace.
