Percentage of tickets issued by NYPD officers that went to black or Latino people for . . . . jaywalking: 99% riding a bike on the sidewalk: 86.5% nyc.streetsblog.org

And in 2018, 94% of the people arrested for loitering in NYC were black or Latino. I’ve long wanted to do a story on loitering—which is illegal in many places—but seems like the ultimate sign of a free society: People allowed to hang out in public spaces. How can that be wrong?

imagine being the kind of person who's ideologically commited to believing (or pretending to believe) that only black and latino people jaywalk in new york city and doesn't even work for the Manhattan institute

On top of the gross inequities, police use this role to hold the city budget hostage. Tickets bring is $600mm/year, and when police come under scrutiny for brutality, citations tumble.

I've literally never even HEARD of someone getting a ticket for jaywalking in New York City. I always assumed it just wasn't enforced. I've been in massive crowds all jaywalking at once. I've jaywalked in front of police cars.
