Republicans didn't give up on COVID. Republicans locked themselves in their homes and wore masks meekly, because the government told them to. They lost their jobs and watched as their businesses suffered as a result, but they did their patriotic duty. Then the Democrats incited the mobs of black people and the woke white liberals to storm the streets and loot and riot and destroy things. That created the surge in COVID cases we're seeing now.

Republicans then asked themselves, why should I sacrifice everything when the Democrats destroy any possibility that our efforts at staying home will do any good? So Republicans have had enough. We have all had enough of the Democrats and their never ending temper tantrums and childishness.
