The pick-up in Covid-19 cases in the US correlates with the appropriate lag from several things that occurred roughly during the same time period: protests, riots, and "opening up" of the economy. I think we could all have guessed what was going to happen to the number of cases when we saw how people were acting a few weeks ago.
