NEWS - Valujet sells surplus aircraft (big deal...)

Friday October 4 4:54 PM EDT

ATLANTA, Oct 4 (Reuter) - ValuJet Inc said on Friday it had sold 15 surplus DC-9 and MD-80 aircraft and five engines, enabling the company to retire $46.6
million of aircraft bank debt.

The sale eliminated a major portion of surplus aircraft capacity and associated debt and nearly completes the carrier's fleet standardization effort to DC-9-30s,
ValuJet said.

Reducing the number of aircraft types was a key step for the company to gain U.S. Federal Aviation Administration approval to return to service, ValuJet said.

The agency grounded ValuJet in the summer after inspectors found maintenance problems. The increased inspections followed a crash in the Florida Everglades in
May that killed 110 people.

ValuJet's fleet is now at 45 DC-9-30 series aircraft and one MD-83, the carrier said. The company has plans to sell the one MD-83, it said.
