Just a quick follow-up to my post and a WARNING.

Bella, our German Shepherd, has now been diagnosed with Leptospirosis. A preventable decease as a vaccine is available. We always had our dogs vaccinated against Lepto but missed it with Bella since we wrongfully assumed that this was done when we adopted her a year ago with the assurance that “all” vaccinations were up to date.

New or existing dog ... Please make sure that ALL vaccinations are up to date. “All” is a chewing gum term as it very much depends on your dog’s surroundings / your walking habits / your local situation. For us it was always Rabies, Lepto and Distemper plus Heartworm & Lyme (ticks) prevention.

On a personal note ...

We were very lucky to find a truly outstanding vet during this time when no vets are easily accessible. Bella is being treated in the vet’s home surrounded by VERY caring people, two other dogs and a cat (with proper distancing). She will need 2 weeks of intensive treatment and has at this point a 80% + chance of survival.

PS: Do the math ... Annual vaccinations cost maybe $200 to $300. Our vaccine screw-up will likely cost us north of $5,000. Money aside, the toll this ordeal takes on the dog (and us) can’t be put into dollar terms.
