...”beating the market" is not the ultimate objective of investing took me a long time too. It's the main message of so much financial info/news/advice, but it's a such narrow view.

This is so true. So many investment boards and posters assert that this is the one and only goal of investing. That is simply not true in the least. I’ll go further than you. I think acting as though it is, is foolish.
