Medjet device cleared for marketing

EDISON, N.J., Jan 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given Medjet Inc clearance to market a device used in eye surgery to remove the epithelium from the cornea, the company said Wednesday.

Medjet said in a statement that removing the epithelium, a membrane-like tissue, is commonly done prior to vision correction and other surgery on the cornea.

The new device, called HydroBrush Keratome, uses a fine sheet of high speed water as the epithelial removal element, Medjet said.

Medjet said it is also investigating the use of the HydroBrush Keratome as a treatment for the removal of pterygium, a fleshy overgrowth on the anterior surface of the eye.

The company said it estimates that pterygium afflicts more than 100 million people in regions of the world that are sunny, warm, windy or dry.
