Peter,

When you attempt to split the spread on AMEX and do not get a quick fill, do you see your bid or ask now reflected in the quote as the new best bid or ask? I do for NYSE issues, I don't for AMEX. I've only traded SPY on the AMEX however. When this representation happens one can get a very good idea where he stands as far as time priority goes. If the new ask size is initially the size of your offer, the odds are it's yours and you are first in line at that price.
