RE: A Tale of Two Companies.

Did anyone see Netscape's report? They missed earnings.

NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS (Nasdaq:NSCP - news) Down 1/4 to 16 5/8... Posts $0.22 4Q operating loss vs. $0.09 EPS as higher R&D, sales & marketing costs offset 9% revenue rise... Morgan Stanley DWD says results lower than expected... BT Alex Brown downgrades.

Hmmm, let's compare:

Revenues: Iomega, up 43% to 1.7 billion. Netscape, up 54% to 500 million.

Earnings: Iomega, up 100% to 115 million. Netscape, down from a profit to a 115 million loss.

P/E Ratio: IOM at 19. NSCP has negative earnings, but assuming 7% profit (which is typical for them until recently) they would be at 39.

Market Cap: IOM at 2 billion, which is 1.1 times sales. NSCP at 1.5 billion, which is 3 times sales.

Analysts: Analysts for both companies downgrade.

Market Reaction: IOM down 35%. NSCP down 4%.

So much for efficient markets. I realize that they are in completely different markets. I realize that the valuations are based on future expectations. I realize that I can't expect the world to be fair. But I still don't think it's fair. ;)
