My family has Care First - Blue Cross Blue Shield - pretty good health insurance.

I went for a yearly physical a few weeks back and the explanation of benefits form just arrived in the mail.

The charge from my Dr. for the physical was $335 - and the allowable charge was $159 which BCBL paid in full, no out of pocket to me

Usually when blood work is done you might see "diagnostic services" charge of around $100 - allowable charge is under $10 - again no out of pocket.

Now get this:

My son had to get a COVID -19 test - his employer required it.

We just received the explanation of benefits page.

Diagnostic Testing - (the covid test) - $250.00

Allowable Charge - $250

Insurance Pays - $250

My cost = $0.00

What is going on? $250 - no reduction to the testing company - just pay them what they ask!
