Gender positioning is so "in vogue", it may be a terrible move if the candidate is not the real thing.

Boards have a responsibility to pick the very best suited for the job.

Gender , race, religion should be far down the scale of qualifications / characteristics of the candidate.

It isn't just that. So much of a CEO's attention is diverted nowadays from the actual running of the firm. You have to be able to juggle a lot more and NOT take your eye off your clients, employees, the competition etc. There is a movement to create a lot more "C" level positions. All of which divert attention from clients.

I have long noticed that managers tend to surround themselves with people who exhibit the same skill set as themselves. They value in others what they value in themselves. There is a crying need for diversity but the diversity is much deeper than color, sex or creed.

There is also a leadership void, we have a lot of over managed under-led firms.
