So very odd. The lack of homogeneity in the country's cultural development

has given rise, over time, to a lack of, or just somewhat weak traditions --- and that looseness in everything plays to the country's creative strengths. But, like all coin, it's two-sided. The flip side is the eventual cost of a lack of discipline, often confused with freedom.

This gives rise to the "we are a free people, so don't tell me what to do, I gotta be me!" etc ...... which is what an evangelical friend of mine who owns 7 guns (for what purpose no one knows) says to me. And that is in response to my caution to wear a mask and quit going to the gym unless he wants to kill his wife with his virus.

People have a sense of collective good only for things that have almost zero value (such as say "Have a nice day!", or " don't say he ...., but say she/he ..... in sentences). As soon as collective good requires real effort (e.g, wear a damn mask!) the quarreling starts. They miss the point that the egoic self and freedom cannot exist without being at odds.

But you have to admit ..... freedom is so important here that we insist on viruses living free too! Nowhere else!
