By the time I was a few years into a form of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis that hit me at age 30, I could barely walk. I was lucky enough to be become roomates with a guy who was a yoga teacher and whose girlfriend was a nurse also trained in ayurvedic medicine. Under her guidance I did an major fast.

After two days all inflammation has stopped -- this effect is known to western medicine --and by the time I ended the fast 11 days into the planned 15, I was walking almost normally again, and things gradually got better from there, even as I improved my flexibility using yoga. (I can still toouch my toes, which according to my doctors is impossible for someone like me.) I was back playing ultimate frisbee within two years.

This was obviously a drastic intervention into a drastic situation, and only possible because I had proper medical supervision. I would never go beyond three days without supervision even if I was still young and healthy.

The most delicious thing I have ever tasted was the first thing I 'ate' after the fast -- I boiled some rice, discarded the rice, diluted the resulting rice water with 64 times the volume of regular water, and drank the diluted result. So delicious when you have had nothing for 11 days!

The most difficult things about the fast were:
1) A new restaurant had just opened less than 100m away from my home and didn't have their venting working properly yet, so they entire neighbourhood reeked of garlic and ginger. Non-fasting neighbours were complaining, so you can imagine the effect on me!
2) It is not until you fast that you realize how much of the day you spend buying, preparing, eating, and cleaning up after eating food. As well, I didn't sleep much and obviously had no energy to do anything, so that was a very long 11 days.
