Wiseowl, I fully understand that you better not tell us your co. name. I have a guess, of course, but I do not want to insist. There is nothing gained in it.

Seems like your replies make me always curious to know a little more <g>: Can you see the possibility that the high-performance Unix server(s) (Starfire) will one day replace the mainframes you have installed? Or do you see the continued need for the IBM mainframes for some particular apps your business must run? I'm rather asking from the number-crunching-capability point of view, not the actual likelyhood of abolishing the mainframes, as other issues may play there like project costs in time and $$$, re-programming of the software, testing, etc.

Slightly Off-topic: Mainframe performance

Thread, is the high-end in performance with the mainframes still increasing strongly? Or have they reached a performance plateau where only relatively modest further advances are achieved? I get the (uneducated) impression that performance by Unix machines can still make big strides whereas in mainframes the technology is not as rapidly progressing anymore. Guess I may be burned for this one then, if not yet for my previous confessions <g>.
