The parties stand for different ideologies.
But the people stand for thousands of different ideologies. Many scientific studies have shown that the "wisdom of the crowd" is much better at finding success than the rule of few. When you break the primary elections into a few parties then you have broken the large scale averaging necessary to make the "wisdom" work. It's all a matter of being a large enough crowd for the good ideas to predominate over the fringe ideas.

Party primaries not only limit the voter pool at the primary, but when the real election come about the choice is already limited to a very small number of candidates. Essentially the choice has already been made and the voter can only confirm a decision made by too few to be a good choice. The fallacy is one of any tyrant who thinks getting their own way more often is a good thing. In reality it's not even good for the one who gets their way.
