In east Asian culture homes, I'd say 90% of the time shoes off at the door. About half my friends and a few of my relatives prefer shoes off. They don't want to "impose" on their guests, I don't think smelly feet has ever come up as motivation. I'd say, in general, personal hygiene isn't a big enough priority here -- I think some people unconsciously see it as a personal freedom thing. There's also a mentality that its ok for me to fart anywhere I wanna but not you mentality. I hate that. I NEVER do that. Please, no lie detector. It still trips me out that men skip the hand washing after using a public restroom - even during COVID19. I am too polite to say anything.
