OT I am in China, except for casual visits to Thailand, S.Korea, & the U.S. this past year (shut down since mid Feb though).
In looking at that obesity list, what I find remarkable, is that S.Koreans (4.7%) are "leaner" than their near neighbors to the North (6.8%). I was thinking mass starvation in Trump's self- proclaimed, best buddy, Kim Jong-un's "hermit kingdom". Looking at VietNam, Cambodia, Japan.. all "lean" at under 4.3%. Thailand, 10% the exception.
China at 6.2% does not surprise... the fresh markets are busy, morning & evening" as in vegetables/ fruits #1 in the daily diet. Everything is fresh as buying food here is a daily exercise. I'd say the vegetables/ fruit, qualities/ quantities/ varieties here are way superior and way less expensive/ commercialized than what I see In the U.S. (& no sales tax). Meat is considered expensive & is usually a side dish (except for holidays & special occasions). Processed foods, nil. Chinese are healthy in appearances.
But what's odd here, is that the SUVs I see are huge. Still, most vehicles are sedans... quite a few expensive Mercedes, BMWs, Audis.. the European sort of vehicle. I have a Starbucks near. The other day, the place was packed. People like to be observed, spending excessive monies on mediocre coffee, looking at their I-pads, probably seeing at what a Tesla may cost. This is China. Me, I settle for a McDonalds coffee, double cream (anywhere in the world.. McD's coffee quality consistent). I take the near subway (tickets max at 5rmb.. 7 min intervals) or taxis 9- 10rmb, first 10 min or so.. no tipping) in my city of +8mil). I don't give a shit. |
