Virus are nothing more than raw material from which DNA is constructed. They themselves do not contain DNA and so are not living. As such they are not able to reproduce on their own. When they gain entry into a living (human) cell they are able to hijack that cells reproduction machinery and use it to replicate themselves in great numbers. At some point the cell ruptures and spews large numbers of newly created virus into the host's blood stream. Each of these then goes on to infect another cell and repeat the process. Eventually the body recognizes the invaders and mounts a defense by creating specialized cells that track down the foreign virus cells and destroy them. Like all wars eventually one side or the other dominates. If the virus is of a deadly variety and the body is overcome the patient will die.
