More government and higher taxes. No Thanks.

Goose-

I'm a fan of yours on SI-- I've also spent a lot of time as a network producer, traveling everywhere on earth.

However, I think education is VERY important. The schools are in pretty shitty shape considering how well educated people are going to have to be to make it in the next 50 years. The Schools must be improved or we're all sunk.

Think of how a crashing economy with high unemployment will drag things down when you reach 65 or 70 and are not quite as vigirous as you are now. And if you have kids... think of them living through something that might resemble India or Mexico City. Educating the kids so they can build wealth is the only way out of a furture quagmire.

Also, the US has the lowest tax rates of any country in the West that I can think of... With a good accountant I bet you can pull your taxes down to 20% or so. When you look at Canada (I believe national and provincial taxes combined are over 50% for a middle class family) or England (high taxes + 18% hidden sales tax)... Switzerland is the only country I know of where you can negotiate your taxes (and the regular rates are similar to ours).

This whole lower tax bull is a knee-jurk call for pure selfishness as I see it. We need SOME government regulation and guidance to educate move the whole country along (look at the asian mess for a regulation related disaster)...

I agree Big Tobacco will not pay for it all... it's doomed in the US in the next 30 years anyway. But the amount we pay to build one stupid B-2 can do a lot to raise the educational standards of the whole country. And what do we need the B-2 for other than to employ a lot of aerospace guys in Palmdale?

Look at the big picture, buddy.
