What you miss is that southern Democrats and northern Democrats were in the same party.

@TheValuesVoter

It took a good 32 years for black voters to flip hard from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party. It took only 20 years for asian voters to do the same. To almost the same degree.

Worst of all, while they've alienated almost all black and many latino voters, they've alienated asian voters to almost the same degree that they've alienated black voters. Which sucks for them because asian voters are the fastest growing demographic group in the electorate.

At some point in time, those gimmicks will stop working. And meanwhile they've alienated, possibly forever, not just the voters who they tried to discourage from voting but also many white voters who see what they're doing and hate it as well.

The GOP, at least a decade ago, clearly made a decision that instead of trying to seriously mend fences with black and latino voters, that its best path to electoral success was to try to restrict our ability to vote. It was an incredibly stupid and short-sighted decision.

It wasn't always this way.
