I have serious doubts about the credibility of this Lucent offering. It is highly questionable, from a technical standpoint, that they truely achieve 400 Gb of bandwidth simultaneously over one fiber.

This would require some 80 channels at 5 Gb/s which is a non-standard bit rate that no one else is using. Alternatively, it would require 160 channels at OC-48 or 40 channels at OC-192 either of which are saddled with serious technical hurdles. The cost of the components to fully build out a system this massive would be so huge that noone would do it.

I suspect they are playing games with the numbers to undermine some competitive threat. The fact that they are making the annoncement this early also supports the notion of media hype.

I've seen nothing in the trade journals that would make me believe this offering is real. I think they may have something working in the lab but it's a far cry from anything that could be deployed.

Just MHO.
