Where are the Tom Paines of our generation when we need them?

A brilliant historian writes beautifully in the New Yorker about Paine. Yeah, yeah, it’s the New Yorker, but good writing is good writing wherever it appears.

Amazing words Paine wrote. To be read slowly and savored:

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”

Geo. Washington read these words to his troops before crossing the Delaware on a freezing day.
