No question that docs and nurses have learned a lot since March and April. One key lesson is: don't use a ventilator except as a very very last resort. Apparently, COVID can do so much damage to the lungs that a ventilator is virtually a death sentence. They use proning instead and get much better results. That is why there isn't a ventilator shortage--because they aren't be used.
