8/21/2020 Contest update
(Contest YTD is calculated from 1/3/2020 close.)
It is what it is. It isn’t what it isn’t. Unknown unknowns. Tail risk. Did Jeffrey Epstein kill himself? Why do people go nuts when asked to wear a mask? Why is Tesla over $2,000 and Fibrogen barely over $40? Confused? So is Bulba. Well, I’m pretty sure Covid-19 is not a hoax.
Be that as it may, for the week, biotechs lagged the record-breaking NCI. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 8.24% YTD (vs. up 8.65% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 12.04% YTD (vs. up 12.68% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 19.16% YTD (vs. up 17.83% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 25.40% YTD (vs. up 22.15% YTD a week ago).
Thanks to TRIL, JBOG’s portfolio had a boffo week and remained Contest leader with a 161.71% YTD gain. Both also TRILers, FILO’s portfolio, up 146.82% YTD, and OLIVIER’s portfolio, up 74.01% YTD, also had good weeks, holding on to second place and third place.
At Friday's close, 29 of the 42 Contest portfolios were still in the green, with 19 beating the NBI and 16 beating the SPSIBI.
The 197 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 26.35% with the median still in the red with a YTD loss of -0.94%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: ONVO did 1-20 reverse split.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe and relaxing August weekend biotechies.
Peace & good health,
Bulba
