<<Compaq has more resouces so they'd have to go back and see whether Alpha could be a viable competitor under CPQ control>>

As a very recent ex-DEC investor, I'd like to point out that DEC is NOT selling Alpha - they're selling the Fab, and have a contract for Intel to continue to manufacture Alpha. DEC(CPQ) still owns Alpha, and has retained the design team to continue planned future enhancements and shrinks. In addition, Intel would not have possible monopoly power over Alpha manufacture & price setting because they are not exclusively liscensed to its manufacture - Samsung and Mitsubishi also produce the chip. This gives Intel incentive to use state of the art technology in shrinking Alpha as fast as possible to compete against the other suppliers of Alpha - fastest/cheapest/most efficient manufacturer will profit. IMO regarding DEC/INTEL fab approval, with CPQ's volume putting out Alpha NT boxes it should ensure Alpha remains a viable competitior ONLY IF Intel is allowed to produce it. DEC losing money on its fab proves one should focus on its strengths. I think it would be a mistake for the FTC to think there's any benefit to having CPQ keep the fab and manufacture it when there are already alternate sources. This really should be the win-win situation they portray all around with intense competition to push Alpha's price/performance as an alternative to traditional Intel chips.

hope this helps,
Tom
