There is a bigger and more significant long term effect of the decoupling between China and the US. Because it is highly unlikely for the US to stop the growth and ascent of China, the Trump policies have simply traded short term "gains" for much greater long term "pains."

The summary of my thesis is that by putting pressure on China, the US is making China more independent and therefore a greater competition to the US. For example, once China develops its own App Store for cell phones and/or alternative OS for the phones, Google will lose its monopoly on the OS and the store. And while initially this store and perhaps the OS will be inferior to Google's, over time it will become a viable competitor that would not exist in the first place.

A similar argument goes for chips and equipment.
