Delta Firms Up Pilot Cuts As Demand Languishes -- Market Talk

Dow Jones Newswires August 24, 2020 05:27:00 PM ET

1726 ET - Delta Air Lines said it will furlough 1,941 pilots on Oct. 1 as the airline prepares to shrink down to cope with demand for travel that doesn't look likely to rebound anytime soon. "We are six months into this pandemic and only 25% of our revenues have been recovered," John Laughter, senior vice president of flight operations, told Delta pilots in a memo Monday. "Unfortunately, we see few catalysts over the next six months to meaningfully change this trajectory." Delta had previously warned that as many as 2,558 pilots were at risk of being cut. Over 1,800 pilots took early retirement offers, but Delta still has more pilots than it expects to need next summer, which the airline believes will be the high point for demand in the next 12 to 18 months, Laughter wrote.
