There are indeed elections but there are a few problems

- All leaders of the opposition parties are picked by Golkar (The ruling partry ie Suharto). Remember what happened to Megawati when she became too big for her boots (Golkar replaced her)
- All the opposition policies must be approved by Suharto
- They are effectively barred from campaigning (TV restrictions etc) so no one outside Jakarta really knows who they are.

The election result is always known before the votes are counted (Suharto always wins >70% of the vote)

If Suharto wants to win the election he will (short of a coup)
